Light is essential

Absorbing sunlight provides the essential nutrients needed by the body, while maintaining a healthy metabolism. However, harmful radiation can pose health risks, particularly for our eyes.

UV rays

They are emitted by the sun and are present even on cloudy days. They are reflected by many surfaces: roads, water, snow... Chronic exposure to UV rays combined with other factors increases the risk of conditions such as:

– cataracts,
– pterygium,
– photoconjunctivitis

Blue light

It is mainly emitted by: the sun, artificial lighting, and digital tools. Exposure to natural blue light is beneficial for health. However, a portion of blue light is potentially harmful to retinal cells, and therefore to the eyes. When you look at a screen, the light is direct, whereas it is diffused when you are in an outdoor environment.

The positive sides of blue light

- Blue light of approximately 460 nm influences the production of melatonin to regulate the internal "clock" (circadian rhythm).
- Blue light (scattered during the day) blocks the production of melatonin.
- More blue light reduces the production of melatonin.
Result: boosts mood and stimulates alertness
- Less blue light increases the production of melatonin.
Result: more melatonin causes drowsiness (not ideal during the day).

The negative aspects of blue light

- the glare effect
- the sensation of visual fatigue
- Light absorption ("heating") can damage retinal cells.
- Macular degeneration (MD) can be a serious consequence.
This risk of cellular damage is referred to as the blue light hazard.
